AK or Bust: 8,800 Miles, and We’d Do It Again

July-Sept, 2018
This is a long, boring (to some) account of our first trip driving to Alaska in our “Skinny Winnie”, a 2014, 24-foot RV, Winnebago body on a Mercedes Sprinter chassis. It has a queen-sized bed that slides out the back (G model), and another slide on the side, but being “skinny” we can fit in regular width parking spaces. And that’s a definite advantage in the RV world. Before we left, we got new tires and removed the hubcaps, which are oddly called “simulators” by the industry. (The name is kind of like how the English call fancy hats “fascinators.”) We knew we’d be bouncing along some rough roads along the way, and didn’t want to lose them. Good call. We also invested in a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), Tire Tracker, which has screw-on gadgets that alert if tire pressure drops. That, too, saved us some grief later on. Bill installed Sumo springs and a Helwig sway bar to decrease the rock & roll, a definite improvement, and he cut wooden blocks to use for leveling rather than those awful orange plastic Duplo blocks. We can’t afford the $$ or weight to install automatic levelers. Oh, life is hard!
First Night on the Road
For those who aren’t interested in a long, LONG account of the trip, but just want advice on driving to Alaska, here’s the deal. Get the Milepost book (Amazon – comes out each spring), make Dead Man Lake, a day’s drive south of Tok MM1254, a destination, planning to stay at least a couple days. Go fishing, but if you can’t, the IGA in Haines has great salmon filets. Take the Top of the World Highway from Dawson City to Chicken. It really feels like the top of the world. This isn’t my usual entertaining blog – more of a trip log, just to save the info for future trips. And for sure we’ll be back.
TRIP LOG: START 2:22 PM sat 7/28/18
33,360 start Fuel 33,604. eureka $56 16.18 241 mi. = 14.9mpg

O/N @ Reservoir 30 miles before Ely. Got a treat... FaceTime w Jane while we stopped for fuel in Eureka. First 4 hours, no stops... great potty break!
Got late, nearing dark. He wants overnight in Ely casino parking lot, she wants boondock in a quiet place. The gods were smiling. Took a chance on washboard dirt road to BLM campground Illipah Reservoir, 37 miles west of Ely. Jackpot! Only has 17 sites, and only 6 were occupied.

Sunday July 29 on the road 8:15 had to fire up generator for coffee... sorry, 6 other people!
Brunch in Wells, @ Bella’s Table full of hot sauce- he had to taste!

A real connoisseur!

Craters require wine

Can't recommend sitting on lava rocks!

O/N @ Craters of the Moon NP $7.50 – Wasn’t on our radar, but saw it on the map & took detour – What a cool place! Nice hiking, interpretive signs.
Mon 7/30 leave park @ 11:30
Fuel in Arco, ID 34,051 227 miles 15.4 gal $55.50 14.74mpg

Got tip on FB user group to go to Mackay Reservoir. Even though only an hour up the road, pulled in at 1:00 & spent the afternoon gazing at the water & reading on Kindle. Only $9 for elec/water site

7/31 Bill’s bday! Took showers in the rig then did a fill & dump, hit the road around 10:00, to Challis, looking for FedEx office to print, sign, scan & fax - Found the library!
Camp in Sula Dept of Agriculture Spring Gulch $6 right on the Bitterroot River. Great steak dinner, friendly host who gave us free firewood. Nice dog named Lassie... Guess what breed?

We always make "dashboard tea" as we drive down the road - thrifty travelers, for sure!

Wed 8/1 leave 9:00AM
34,268. 216 fuel in Darby Not full - had to pre-pay 10.25 gal $33

What we saw @ Glacier – That’s right, just the brochure!

Went to Glacier NP – all campgrounds sold out
Went to Devil’s Creek- sold out
Went to “summit campground”. No such animal! Nearly drove off cliff trying to turn around. Dang GPS – We used to call such things “Garmin adventures.” Rig wouldn’t back up, wanted to roll forward, just 4 ft from cliff. Very scary😧 I hopped out (only one of us needs to die!), put rocks in front of the tires & told him to gun it in reverse. Whew!
See that little rock? That was under the tire as we were about to go over the edge.
Below is where we finally camped beside the forest service road.

Tried a couple spots beside the road. Gave up, pulled off at wide spot and hoped meth heads wouldn’t get us. Multiple frustrating attempts to level... close enough for govt work! Place seemed isolated. Even took wallet out of purse and put it in smaller purse in case someone demanded my purse. They can have my wallet with $22 in it! Train tracks just below and only a mile off the road. No cell service for miles.

Thurs 8/2 E Glacier - still alive – Passed Summit campground down the road a couple miles. Stupid GPS! But it was sold out, too. I guess you need reservations to go near Glacier NP in the summer. But we don’t do reservations, so forget it. We’ve been there before.  34.590 202.1 13.6 $44.02 =14.85mpg

Smooth border crossing @ Carway, heading for Waterton , but stymied- campground closed. Wandered up to Pincher Creek where we stayed at a funky RV park, Sleepy Hollow. The plug-in looked iffy, but we have a fancy surge protector thing so we went for it. $30 CDN plus $3 ea to shower, in a stall smaller than the RV. Sketchy but functional. I sent pics to Adam, The Allstays guy.
.

Next door trailer told us about tractor & engine show and we stopped there on way out of town to Calgary. They invited us to stay with them on our way home. Very sweet couple.

I found my tractor!

11 miles in, on dirt washboard road, in the rain -
And no sites available, ugh.
French Creek found online- family farm converted to RV Park, not yet on Allstays. $40 plus $4 Bill’s shower. Sent info to Adam to add facility. Other desperate travelers will thank me.
I'm in Canada now... bring on the cider!
STOP!!! When traveling, you need to stay alert and flexible, because you never know what you're going to see. And sometimes you simply have to stop, to enjoy the moment. That happened as we were passing by Kimiwan Lake/McLennan in Alberta. There was a sign for a bird walk. What a lovely peaceful place with great bird watching.

O/N @ Taylor mm34 muni park Peace River $25 CDN, only available because someone left early, got shaded site next to chain smokers who talked loudly until after midnight. We slammed windows & turned on AC, hollered out, “There are people trying to sleep.” They didn’t care. This is why we boondock. Enjoyed idling diesel to warm up @8AM!

Decided to be proactive and get tomorrow’s reservation now, 400 miles away. The pressure is on! Scheduled Toad River, before Laird Hot Springs $37 charged

Tuesday 8/7 8:30AM leave for Laird Hot Springs.
Ahhhhh, Perfect!

Milepost book & roadside signs promised sheep, bison & bears along the road... Nada!
Finally, 9:55 saw a bison near Laird Hot Springs @ mm835km a whole herd, both sides of the road. Noticed virtually no litter along the road. Because so many trash cans?

35,960 =190 mi  45Ltrs = 11.9 gal =16mpg

$10 day use hot springs – Love it.
Finally smoke-free air! MM 513
Around 2:00, near Contact Creek- scary- our rig drifted into oncoming lane. “Whoa!” I exclaimed, then Bill jerked awake and said, “Good thing you were awake!” Definitely time to stop for some coffee. I think it was the relaxation from the hot springs then lunch.
Watson Lake - Cell service!!! (For a minute anyway)

The Watson Lake signpost forest has our sign!

Stopped at signpost forest, groceries & fuel Watson Lake Visitors center lots of brochures, & said government campsites never fill up, are spacious & $12 so we’ll try for tonight

O/N Teslin Lake Govt campground - Got the last spot, not level but at least private. "Never full," right. $12 CDN & cell svc!

Wed 8/8 on the road @ 7:45
Headed for cinnamon rolls! Chalkboards in bathrooms “Bumpa was here” and saw one that said “Indian, Ak 2018” That’s where we’re going!
Johnson's Crossing - Get your buns in here!
Lovely bakery & gift shop. On to Whitehorse 36,365 =272mi $99= $76.06 70.26ltrs 18.56 gal = 14.7mpg
There are great resources at the visitor centers.

Dang, stopped to make espresso & generator not working. Solenoid keep running making a ka-thunk sound & display shows generator is going but it’s not. I NEED my espresso!!! I liked the sign, though.

This guy carries tools!

Facebook helpers say need to fix solenoid, but maybe just a loose connection. No parts here in the middle of nowhere. Will try Dawson Creek in the morning. It’s draining our house batteries so Bill got out his tools and unhooked.

Stewart Crossing 36,585 =220 53.99 ltrs 14.26 gal =15.5 mpg $81.47 = $62.57
O/N @ Moose Creek govt campground $10 CDN - leveling a challenge, but by using a long pull-through, got close enough.

Aug 9, Thursday - On the road @ 7:30
The Top of the World Highway is truly beautiful. A little rough since it's mostly gravel, but worth it. The Dawson City ferry (free) is an experience.

The border crossing is pretty remote. We chatted with the US border patrol guy for quite a long time, and ne never asked us a single question, but he did stamp our passports. Very cool.

Chicken!

Chicken 36,806 220 14.8gal $59 14.9mpg
We now have no steps! Lost a nut & maybe shear pin going over the Top of the World . Bill just took off the steps and we bought a plastic step stool @ Walmart.
O/N@ Sourdough campground in Tok. Owner used to have a yellow lab named Sadie! I had to show pics of MY Sadie. $41 so we can have a shower. Won a free breakfast in the sourdough pancake toss!

Fri Aug 10 9:00AM
Heading for Anchorage! But only after free breakfast.
Moose crossed the road in front of us, but alas, couldn’t get the camera open in time. But really, moose pics are a dime a dozen, so no great loss.

We drove the Tok cutoff to Anchorage, and it has miles of frost heaves, making us very glad we installed the heavy duty Sumo springs. Like the canary in the coal mine, we found a vehicle to follow who could show us what was ahead... until he got away. There were sections of the highway that were absolutely teeth jarring. But nothing bad happened.

We found out we’re very fortunate to be doing our trip on the tail end of the season. Folks are mostly heading home now, so we’re able to get in most places without reservations. Earlier every single spot was taken and we would have been turned away without reservations.

We stopped & fixed sandwiches overlooking the Matanuska Glacier, putting us even further behind, only to be halted just a couple miles further down the road by road work. We sat for about 15 minutes. It’s so dusty... makes me wonder why anyone in AK washes their car.

37,023 216 mi Glennallen $54 14.33 = 15.1mpg
Quick stop @ Palmer Fred Meyers and on to meet M&D @ Beautiful Sarah’s, then out to the house, dinner w/M, D & Kristin at the Turnagain Armpit BBQ Fabulous evening!

Sat 8/11 Anchorage Costco
37,260 = 238 15.7mpg $47
Dang, just got set up and pump said membership expired, so had to go inside to renew. Take 2!

Amazing good fun with M&D in Anchorage. Enjoyed the museum where M works, drove through the driving rain to get sourdough pancakes in Girdwood, and loved camping "in the wild" at M&D's house under construction. Lovin' on Sadie dog, too. I saw some law breakers riding in the back of the pickup to go to dinner at the Turnagain Arm Pit BBQ!

First dinner in the new house!

Tues 8/14, left Indian 9:00AM, heading for Nenana on the way to Fairbanks
37,429 = 189 11.7 gal = 16.2mpg
Nenana $21 - 5 gal – Crazy high price - Not full...Just enough to get us to Fairbanks
O/N @ weird RV park $27 didn’t answer their phone, nobody in office when went there for change to do the laundry.

Wed 8/15 Heading for Fairbanks Cummins dealer. Generator miraculously fixed itself! Super nice clerk crawled under our rig in her clean clothes & we didn’t buy anything. Had a pizza delivered for their trouble.

Fairbanks Walmart Homeless Royalty!  (We are in a Mercedes, after all!) RV parks were $50 – Nope! Had to stay 2 nights in Fairbanks waiting for paperwork & notary to sign off on real estate deal. Yay, we no longer have our house of 36 years!!! Killing time, went to Pioneer Park and North Pole (LOVE the tamales – a dozen planned to freeze somehow ended up gone by the next day), Robot Pizza, with oven outside the building. Turned out to be a nice free stay in Fairbanks.
Our own Santa was visiting his other home

The famous Cylle

Fairbanks Robot Pizza - They cook it outside

Fri 8/17 Last fill leaving Fairbanks 37,932 = 182 12.9 = 14.1 mpg $46.18
Night @ Moon Lake $18 - only ones there! Simply had to stay. Saw owl on fire pit. WOW!
My favorite pic of the whole trip

The water level was a little high! We were the only ones there.
Sat 8/18 leave 10:30AM, heading for Haines Junction. Fuel Tok
38,138 =205 13.7gal =15 mpg $46
Stopped by to check out Dead Man Lake. It's a wildlife refuge, and even though it was only 2 hours down the road, HAD to stay. Free! Canoes, firewood, nightly presentations, Auggie Doggie camp greeter. Great destination for a family vacation. Stay 2 weeks free, kids have a blast on the lake. I helped the host stack wood, because I was so grateful for the opportunity to be there. We also made a donation.

Mon 8/20 Haines- hoping for Skagway ferry tomorrow. Nope- they arbitrarily changed our reservation to Wed @ 4:00, arriving Skagway 5:00.

Stopped @ Million Dollar Falls, and agreed that next trip we'll camp here.
We stopped at a little off-the-road bakery in Haines Junction, and pretty much ordered one of everything, including the delicious salmon chowder.
There were no hot dog buns, so my genius mind figured out we could use cheesy bread sticks instead. OMG!

We crossed back into AK, stopped in Haines & took advice of border agent - halibut fish & chips from Big Al’s then big salmon fillet from IGA, 3 meals worth. Bill cooked his salmon to perfection! Too bad I don’t eat fish.

O/N @ Chilkat State Park $15 14% grade on s gravel road to get into the park. Had to gather driftwood since all the camp wood stands were empty.
Tire Tracker- 35psi in right rear outside tire. Rock? Nail? Bill used air compressor to pump back up so we can get to tire shop tomorrow. Turns out it’s a good thing the ferry changed us to 8/22 (without telling us)

Tues 8/21 Found Peter’s Tire Repair. We now have a patched tire and a souvenir shard of granite from driving through the blasting area yesterday. Should be ok now.

Laundry, showers, and O/N @ Haines RV Park $42.73 Beautiful morning, stormy afternoon & evening. Bill enjoyed brewery & got porter sealed in a can. So cool to watch - I’m a nerd. I actually saved the can and now have it on the shelf in my den.

Wed 8/22 Leaving Haines
38,609 = 242 $66.70 16.2 gal =14.9 mpg Propane 6.3 gal $26.52

Ferry to Skagway $176 weird- We went in the end, then out the side. Moment of panic when we couldn’t find our rig (it was on the other side) Saw Norwegian Bliss in port, looks inviting (and big). Might need another cruise soon.
Canadian Border agent looked scary – steely eyes – former spy? O/N @ Conrad YT Park $12 CDN Mountain across the lake had fire, but they were just letting it burn.

Thurs 8/23
Missed turnoff by Carcross, but got to see Emerald Lake and the desert. Had a bit of a Milepost adventure taking narrow gravel road to Lewis Lake. But had a great view while we ate reheated stew.

O/N @ Squanga Lake $12 CDN
Talked to escrow co. Claim they didn’t get my message w/ closing wire instructions. Re-sent. Trying to close a real estate deal while on the road in another country is ridiculous.

Fri 8/24 on the road a little before 8:00, to make up for yesterday.

Sent message to Wade in Port Orchard to see if he’s around Labor Day weekend... Yes! And no plans, and his camp will be empty. It really does seem rude to not be able to let folks know when we're coming, but that's how we roll. You never know when you might see something along the way that makes you stop in your tracks and want to stay a while. Looking @ Fri/Sat nights there, then down to seaside to see Austin, back over to Vancouver, then down to Waldport for another beach fix. This is perfect, since it's the long weekend, and camping spots will probably be full anyway.

Crazy high prices ($9 for pk of hot dogs), and weird, bad food at restaurant, with servers who had poor English skills. Weird for a national park. Don’t tell me there were no Americans who could take those jobs.
